Ibex portrait
Caption
Alpine ibexes were almost hunted to extinction in the 19th century. The species was only saved thanks to italian king Victor Emmanuel II who was a passionate hunter. He created a reservation in Gran Paradiso where only him could hunt ibexes. The area was later turned into a national park where hunting was prohibited. Most alpine ibexes were reintroduced using individuals from this area.
