Fontdouce Abbey

This abbey is located in a nice vale between Saintes and Cognac and has a rich history. It was founded 900 years ago. It suffered damages during the french wars of religion and stopped being used as an abbey after the monks where ousted during the french revolution. From 1799 to the mid 20th century, it was used as a farm and wine property. Its current owners started a full restoration in the 1970s, clearing the rubble that had accumulated in some of the buildings to discover superb rooms that had been preserved. It now proposes cultural events and can even be rent for weddings or seminars.
